AVG Free has been my primary source of additional protection from viruses and other unwanted pests on my computer ever since my subscriptions to other security software had expired. However, my computer only has 512 MB of RAM, so I have difficulty running several applications at the same time.
Do you have any suggestions on what other programs I should check out? I prefer that they operate on minimal RAM, but efficiently perform their purpose. I don't use AVG, but I would download it. A new update may be more secure.

Have you tried googling "Anti-Virus, with a low Random Access Memory requirement"?
I know that it is obvious, but it may give you something. Like some guy on a different forum who asked the same question and got an answer from people who know better than us RS'ers.

I use Avira.
AVG said I has like 4 trojans or something, then I downloaded Avira and it wasn't anything of the sort. So, I've had no problems with it so far.

Obvious Fail is Obvious? ANYWAY... I have the best solution for you. Get some more RAM. Seriously, its something like $20 for a 2GB Stick.

Use MicroSoft Security Essentials.
It get's the job done and is the most lightweight anti-virus on the market. Also, RAM does not matter in a computer. Your RAM only handles paging memory and such, nothing to do with memory usage. RAM should not be a replacement for a Processor.

For all I know it could have been a trojan. But, AVG was very irritating so I got rid of it.

http://www.comodo.com/
Products>Free Producs> Firewall and Antivirus. A whole list of programs like a firewall, Antivirus (which by the way, I've done my homework on just about any free Antivirus, there are maybe three good ones. AVG is one of them, but this is the best.) Download at your leisure, the AV package is more than sufficient especially if you are trying to save on ram. Also I would suggest getting these two programs and running them: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and http://www.piriform.com/defraggler ccleaner will go through your files, compact all the useless bits and pieces of junk (leftover things from downloads, temp files floating around ect ect) and delete them all, you'll free up a LOT of space. Defraggler is a defragmentatin program that works better than just defragging and better than almost anything you can buy. Using these two in combination you'll probably free up a a quarter of your hard drive. No joke. (oh and deleting some of that porn probably wouldn't hurt )
