I noticed that if you equip an air staff, the staff replaces air runes, so does the fire with fire rune and so on and so on. but what is the magic staff for? is it much different than a normal staff? does it replace a rune like the other staffs? what good is it for?

It's just for a little mage bonus, basically a staff with no rune supply.

And to answer your next question there is no Law staff!
Now keep in mind Battlestaves (plural for Staff) can be used as a melee weapon as well, with litterly the same melee stats as a rune long sword. Food for thought.

Another thing - with a magic staff you can set your combat options to autocast a spell. Without one, you have to keep going to the Spell tab, clicking a spell and selecting a target.
Lame-tastic.
