Ok, so I've just gotten into this skill and my thieving level is 46... I have to say that this is one of the most frustrating skills to level. I am aware pickpocketing is probably the best way to earn xp, but its sooo annoying. All you're doing at the early levels is geting yourself beaten up (lol).
So I'm wondering, is it really that good a skill to make money with? Or should I just stick to my usual fishing? One of the reasons why it appealed to me at first was because you would always obtain gp or easy to sell items, so you were pretty much guaranteed to earn some gold. However, I realised it would take FOREVER to get to lv70. I read a guide and it suggested guards as begin possibly the best experience for this skill. I'm getting caught a LOT though. Is pickpocketing entirely based off your thieving level or are there a few ways to get a higher success rate (which are verified as being true)? At what level will I start to succeed a lot more with guards? If I can get a 95% success rate on guards, I can see how easy it would be to get to lv70, but right now I just can't see that happening.
Thanks for reading.

Thieving actually isn't really the best way to make money, but I admire you getting it up :D
If you really wanted to go back into fising the I'd suggest you do it, but otherwise stick with something else :D

Yeah I wasn't really impressed with the earnings myself... I just thought I might as well take advantage of being members. I thought to myself that even when pickpocketting Paladins, you'll only really be able to make around 200k an hour tops (and you would have to bring your own food).
Oh btw, does air running still work? Can you get 2k per run? I need some money to merchant with and I cbf fishing. Thanks for the reply by the way.

usually they only pay you 1k I think... Anytime btw ;)
Take advantage of your membership yes...work on some members tats instead of fishing if thats your case :D
That's what I did, and i don't really regret it :D

If you wanna increase Thieving, Id suggest the wall safes in Rouges den, theres a bank there too so you can deposit and get food, you get alot of gems, so carry your chiesel to and earn a little crafting exp too.
Now there is a trap under each safe, if you trigger it you will loose HP, you can,...CAN disarm the trap everytime, but you loose (Temp) 1 point of thieving when you disarm it, so since you have been a fisherman, hopefully you got a good stock of food to help you out.
if no food, goto east ardougne, and steal from the cake stall, a couple hundred full cakes (dropp the others) I suggest this place as it is a quick respawn. If you calcuate respawn time X exp. given this is the best stall in the area.I'll explain:
I forget exact numbers, so well go with these.
cake stall (5 sec. respawn) 30 exp
Silver stall (15 sec. respawn) 90 exp.
again these numbers are not exact, but the fact of the same exp vs time is, the cake stalls are quickest over all.
And you can allways find people that will take the free food off your hands for a quicker trade all items, as opposed to dropping/banking.
Good luck.

Rifleman's suggestions on Thieving are good.
Except, I'd bank all the cakes. Why? Cakes are the best food for training Agility in Brimhaven. The damage you take is alway 10% of your current HP. Each bite of cake heals 3 (or 4 for Chocolate) and makes it easy to keep your hit points low, but not too low.

I have heard the Pyramid Plunder is the best way to get high level thieving. There are a few on these forums that have obtained 99 thieving. I believe that is how they got it. I believe you need to have started Icthlarin's Little Helper (quest) to access the area. I would look it up to discover more . . .

And there is another quest (can't remember the name) you need to do to get access to the bank near the pyramid. Having access to your bank is VERY helpful.

I think the quest to do to get access to the bank is Contact!

I believe you are correct. Interesting quest. Tough fight at the end and most of the guides give bad advice on what equipment to wear.

I think there are some quests that require a high thieving level, so if you are into quests, you'll need to raise it up.
One way is to increase your hunting (another frustrating skill), until you can wear gloves of silence, which decrease your chances of getting caught pickpocketing.
Another way is the Sorceress' Garden mini-game. A little difficult, but good xp.
As for pickpocketing, I never pickpocket solely for cash. I do a lot of Master Farmers for good seeds, and Ham members for fun, good junk, and level one clues. Cakes can be frustrating because the competition is high for those.
Finally, if you haven't done it yet, do the Tears of Guthix quest. Then once a week you can go play the mini-game and get free xp in your lowest skill. Since your lowest is usually also your least favourite, this is an awesome game (and an extremely easy game too).

I personally like the master gardener so I can work on farming at the same time. I also used the sorcerer's garden mini game when I was lower level and it worked well once you get the pattern down.

My advice for raising Thieving is to steal from Master Farmers until you get lvl 51 and then switch to Pyramid Plundering. Also make sure you do The Feud quest as it gives 15K of easy exp. I believe it is the fastest way from your level. Plus you would get a bunch of good seeds along the way. From 51 and up Pyramid Plundering is by far the fastest way.
To do it effectively I would recommend buying a Pharaoh Sceptre from another player (about 700-800K). It would allow you teleport right inside the Pyramid thus making the whole process very quick and allowing you to bank your trinkets (which you can sell later for some cash).
If you have the sceptre the bank in the city is not needed, so you don't have to do the hard Contact quest.
A few words about other ways/NPCs:
1. Guards are bad. Really bad. They hit you on a head even when you lvl 99 and they hit much more often than higher level knights
2. Knights are actually very good right from the start (lvl 55). If you don't like the Pyramid, knights is the only other viable option to go to 99. They 'only' about 30-35% slower. All other NPCs are worse.
3. Paladins are not as bad as guards, but rather slow exp. Their plus is that they are probably the best money makers in Thieving. So if you are doing Thieving for money, paladins are a good choice
4. Gnomes are very tough. You can pickpocket them for fan only. Same goes for elves.
5. Heroes are as bad as guards. But if you want to show off your skill, go ahead and steal from them :)
6. Safes are not the best exp, but kind of fan and you get gems for crafting which is nice.
7. Fremenniks are OK. You actually may try them instead of Master Farmers
8. Yanille Watchmen - not very good, but you can stay there forever without need for food as they give bread loafs.
9. I didn't do Sorcerer's minigame, so can't comment on it.
Finally, I confirm that Thieving is NOT a good money making skill. Other skills are better. But Thieving is fast to raise (in Pyramid) and you don't need to pay a dime for raising it. You would even earn a million or two along the way to 99 (and maybe more if you find a few sceptres in the Pyramid)
