how do you get to Mort'ton? I did Priest in Peril so I can get to Canifis. I was assigned shades to kill for Slaying and they are in Mort'ton.

Mort'ton is south of Canafis. You go throught the gate and find you way through the swamp till you come to a windy path that leads to Mort'ton.

will not allow me to go through the gate - is there a quest I need to do?

To get through the gate you just have to have STARTED a quest that uses that area. Im pretty sure one is started in Canafis Tavern (look for the quest symbol) and another possibly by talking to the priest from Priest in Peril after you have completed that quest.
