What is Runescape?

Runescape is categorized as a MMORPG which is an acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Runescape's most distinguishing feature is that there aren’t many online games like it. It is a browser based game that is played for free by the majority of players. It was created way back in 2001 and was a relatively new entrant in the MMO game scene. It has a fantasy setting like most other MMORPG and is adventure based with tons of skills to raise and quests to complete.

Are there other online games like Runescape?

So are there a lot of online games like Runescape? In short, no, but there are definitely a lot of similar online RPG games out there. Many of them can be bought from your local game shop or downloaded from the net. They include games like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Maple Story, Everquest II, Lineage II, Final Fantasy XI, and Silkroad Online which are all good alternatives. That said, you should keep in mind many of these games aren’t like Runescape because they either charge a monthly fee to be played or aren’t browser based, rather need the game to actually be installed on your computer.

Games like Runescape that RSB Members Recommended?

I asked the members of Runescape Boards the other day if there are any other online games like runescape out there that are free and browser based games? Here are some of their replies:

"I don't think there are, of at least I haven't come across any. Most of them are text based RPGs, but there's that Everquest or Everquest II or whatever it is called. That is the only game like Runescape that I think can even come close to matching runescape. But I guess thats why so many people play runescape; there no other game out there like it."

"I just went and downloaded that game you said was like Runescape - Everquest, and to be completely honest I didn't like it, and it is definitely not that much like Runescape at all."

"I personally thought Everquest was quite average really. Unless you really have a LOT of time on your hands it is really boring. Not to payout Runescape too much but it is even more boring than runescape. Conquer online is sorta of the same game as Runescape, but like Silkroad Online requires a big download to play."

"Silkroad Online does require a fairly big download to play it, so I wouldn't classify it a game like Runescape."

"Runescape would have to be the best free online games that I have ever come across, and I definitely haven't come across many other games like Runescape. I wouldn't imagine that there are many games out there that could match what runescape has to offer."

"Yeah, RuneScape is very unique in that it's browser based so there aren't many games that are exactly like Runescape, but people compare it every day to game like World of Warcraft, Maplestory and DotA. Those sorts of games are definitely similar but are from being the same as Runescape."

"I would say Anarchy Online is a game that is a lot like runescape in terms of depth. You can smith weapons; earn money and develop all kinds of different skills and all that jazz. I would be playing Anarchy Online a lot, but my computer isn't very good and can't handle it. Runescape is still better than Anarchy Online anyway."

"There is Second Life, which is not browser based like Runescape, but it is RPG and graphical. You can do a LOT out there, including making your own things, but it is not quite a game - more like second reality, people and whole companies do real business out there. It is amazing how virtual world and reality are getting mixed. As for true games like Runescape, Dragonfable is somewhat similar: browser based, graphical, RPG, quests, skills, magic. But you don't get to meet other players while playing."
