Everyone agrees that for RuneScape to stay popular is must constantly be updated. But sometimes, these updates cause massive unrest.
December 3rd
On December 3rd the players received the first warning of the updates to come later that month. In the Behind the Scenes, it told readers about Bounty Hunter and Clan Wars, two new mini-games located in the Wilderness. It also introduced Revenants, the ghosts of the slain God Wars warriors. But, this Behind the Scenes is important because it held the only warning to the massive updates, albeit a small one.

On a more serious note, many of you will be aware of our efforts to stop real-world trading and how some of our recent updates have been part of that. You may have questions about it: What does it mean? How does it affect the game? How big a problem is it? What are the ways of dealing with it? To answer these questions and more, we'll be releasing a very important Development Diary on the subject.

It was not widely dwelled upon, as the changes to come were to shocking to be predicted, but it may have invoked someone’s curiosity. This was the beginning of the end, for the old RuneScape.
10 December
On the December 10th, Jagex released a special Development Diary – RuneScape vs. Real-world Trading Here, Jagex tried to explain what Real-world Trading is, and the reasons for the changes. Basically, they said RuneScape would be ruined if Real-world Trading continued, and after wracking their brains, this was what they decided upon.
The game updates were as follows: - The Removal of Unbalanced Trade. Jagex reasoned, that there was no need to perform an unbalanced trade, (unbalanced being more than 3,000gp benefit to one player) but this brought an end to merchanting, as we knew it. A player would also be unable to receive more than 3,000gp worth of items every 15 minutes. From 3rd January no player could perform an unbalanced trade. This stopped Real-world Traders directly giving gold.
- Items dropped, and items dropped upon death. From then on items on the ground were not visible to other players if they were valued more than 3,000gp, or if they had picked up items to the value of 3,000gp within 15 minutes
- Pking Changes – Bounty Hunter. Jagex believed that Pking should continue, but if it were in a smaller area, it would be impossible to safely transfer items, and they made it impossible to enter Bounty Hunter with noncombat-related items. Now Pkers can fight for their opponent’s items while protecting RuneScape from Real-world Traders.
- Pking Changes – Clan Wars and Duel Arena. Jagex introduced Clan Wars, a safe team-based Pking game. Duel Arena was made available to free players as well as members so free players could practice 1v1 combat as well.

The Aftermath
After these updates, many riots occurred. The biggest riot was the World 66 Riot. It started on January 10th, and lasted nearly a week, and was centered in Falador. Supporters of Jagex wore blue, while the rioters wore pink.

On the official RuneScape Forums, the Rants section was overloaded. At the time of the world 66 Riot over 1500 people were in the Rants section, and nearly overloaded it.
Throughout, Jagex has strongly stood by its decision and firmly told everyone that the old Wilderness will not be coming back.
Many people still complain, and minor riots still occur, but I believe these people are wasting their time.
My Thoughts
I think RuneScape is in prime condition. With the recent graphics update, RuneScape is shedding its old coat and its new shiny, glossy coat is great.
Bounty Hunter is a great replacement. With the random opponent, Bounty Locate, and Skulling system, Bounty Hunter is one of my favourite things.
No player should be upset over the unbalanced trade removal. While it may have
killed the old way of merchanting, now its EASIER with the Grand Exchange. Buy low, Sell high.
People still complaining need to think. Everything Jagex removed has a great substitution. I for one, commend Jagex.
